SK Telecom and China Telecom both denied the rumored CDMA joint venture between them. On April 23, 2008, the two parties were reportedly to start CDMA businesses in China by launching a CDMA joint venture.
China Telecom is said to acquire China Unicom's CDMA networks and gain a license for overall businesses to set foot in the mobile service filed, according to an unconfirmed plan for the domestic telecom industry regrouping.
The fixed-line phone operator will not commence talks on introducing strategic investors before it gets the possible license for overall businesses, clarified the company spokesperson. Sources from SK Telecom also said that the South Korean top mobile phone operator had not contacted with China Telecom but it would pay close attention to the changes in the Chinese telecom market and keep its cooperation with China Unicom on multi-areas. SK Telecom has been expanding into overseas markets in recent years because of its saturated share in South Korea. Now, it is the second-largest shareholder of China Unicom.
