The Water element all through the Expo

The World Expo 2008 a confirmed world expo taking water as its theme and centered on Water and Sustainable Development, the Water element is fully displayed in the design of expo halls and buildings and in the arrangement of big events and various performances. In the exhibiting areas, the Water element is everywhere, demonstrating the inspiration of designers’, and Water is mostly applied to the design of the Expo Park as a whole and its corollary facilities. A case in point is the three theme pavilions of the Zaragoza Expo. One, with the theme of Water: Limited Resource, is designed like a giant bridge. Another one, with the theme of Water: Life, has an outward appearance of a water tower just like a huge sweep. The last one, with the theme of Water Scenery, is actually the biggest fresh water aquarium in Europe. The feature exhibitions at the Theme Square of the Expo emphasize the interdependence between human beings and water in different aspects. Exhibitions with the theme of dry and thirst, water and city, territory-water and energy, water of extremes, water as shared resource and enlightenment of water, etc cover a variety of contents and are thought-provoking.

In addition, the Water Forum runs through the Expo as the big event where theoretical rethinking and discussion are carried out. Experts, engineers, politicians, managers, various associations and non-governmental organizations will hold all types of conferences during this period. The Forum is to be closed when the Expo concludes, marked by the successful closing of the International Conference on Water and Sustainable Development and the signing of the Zaragoza Declaration.

It is commonly noticed that each world expo is also a splendid banquet of culture, with people of different nationalities and from different areas gathering together and enjoying various musical, dance and drama performances full of wit and humor. On the evening of June 13, the opening performance of the Joy of Water: Four Seasons and visual symphony performance of Iceberg announced the official opening of a wonderful performance of 93 days.

China Pavilion: a remarkable representation of the birth of the Chinese civilization on the riverside, China’s hydraulic projects and water’s interaction with culture

The Organizing Committee of the China Pavilion is composed of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and the Ministry of Water Resources of the P.R.C. Through three years painstaking preparation work, the China Pavilion has made a fantastic debut and successfully presented to the audience at the World Expo the history and current situation of Water in China, Water and life of the Chinese, and thus fully show the world the Chinese civilization.

With the theme of Human Beings and Water: Returning to Harmony, the China Pavilion covers an exhibiting area of 1,200 square meters and as one of the biggest foreign pavilions at the Expo, is divided into five parts. In the China: a Civilization Born on the Riverside part, the Civilization of Yellow River and the Civilization of Yangtze River are displayed to reveal the relations between water and the birth and evolution of the Chinese civilization. In the China’s Hydraulic Projects part, the water taming projects of China are emphatically presented and the Silk Road on the Sea is introduced as well. In the Water’s Interaction with Culture part, the movie, the Virtue of Water, is played. In the Human Beings and Water: Returning to Harmony part, relations between life and water are explained and the returning to harmony of human beings and water is advocated through the water drops facility and the virtual life interaction facility. The fifth part is the publicity zone for the Shanghai World Expo. The Zaragoza World Expo is the last world expo before the Shanghai World Expo, where the China Pavilion has set up publicity zone and information table to better promote the Shanghai World Expo and fully demonstrate its distinctive elements.

High-tech facilities interacting with the inner secrets of the Chinese civilization

Water waves with climax one after another is dotted with several transparent water bubbles carrying display screens inside so a red ocean of crystal wave light and exuberant vitality is seen at a distance from the China Pavilion. Going inside, the audience is seemingly positioned in a bizarre and remote under-water world. Following the shadow interlocking light and shade, high-tech interactive facilities of various abnormal shapes are like the lost treasures under the sea, awaiting people to come and explore the deep secrets.

In their treasure-hunting tour under the sea, the audience is first welcomed by a giant water-powered clock hung high up in the air. The water-powered clock is with the shape of a sandglass, which must be embraced by three persons adjacently at its widest point. The outer shell of the clock is made by joining materials of different qualities together, respectively implying important stages of the evolution of the human civilization-the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Modern Age when stainless steels, integrated circuits and fiber-optical are utilized in bulks. The water-powered clock with indistinctly seen interlocked gears inside actually models itself on the theory of the water-powered observatory then functioning as a timing tool in the Song Dynasty to pay respect to the water wisdom of the ancient Chinese people. Beneath the clock is a virtual pond in which fishes are swimming through the lotus leaves, looking like a moving Chinese monochrome. Water drops dripping from the clock onto the pond seem to produce ripples from time to time. If the audience tries to stop the dripping, they will find no traces of the water drop but the ripples produced by the dripping calm down. The hand’s approach to the pond may scare the fishes to disperse but once the hand is removed the drops drip to the water surface and the fishes cluster again. The designer explains that this is all directed by the sensitive signals catching system fixed at the pointed end of the pyramid of the water-powered clock.

Going further inside, the audience will be confronted with a giant and transparent Water Dropshung from the roof of the Pavilion. With the help of the computer graphic imaging system and the laser hologram imaging system, the giant water drops cast startling scenes of the Chinese history of water disasters on the ground. Once the movie is over and the light is on, the model of the Qinghai Lama prehistoric flood ruins that is called the Pompeii of the East will rise from underground, demonstrating a scene that in danger of being swamped a mother with her baby child in her arms seem to fall in asleep forever. Those painful memories remind people in a silent manner that the history of China’s development is a water-taming history of the Chinese people’s fight against water disasters.

Beside the water drop is a telescope, seen through whose camera lens, the China Pavilion in reality instantly turns into a hall with carved beams and painted rafters, lanterns hung up high and vivid Chinese traditional lucky beasts such as unicorn, a mythical wild animal called pi xiu and dragon walking or lying on the ground. More amazingly, those beasts seem like having senses, which do not walk through walls but detour when countering obstacles. In fact, this is a set of digital imaging virtual facility that adopts advanced image-catching system to provide the audience with marvelous and joyful feelings through setting scenes of false and true and offering interactive experience of intersection of time and space.

In addition, the audience can imitate playing Xun, an ancient holed wind Chinese musical instrument in a multimedia video game to understand the fluid mechanics operating principles of the Dujiangyan Project. They also can understand the Chinese traditional concepts of the five elements and main and collateral channels by participating in the interactive game of treading on ground pressure sensor and the observation of the virtual life. On the touch platform virtual water bubbles can be stirred by fingers to where the virtual Qingming Scroll is amplified correspondingly. In the sound-experiencing zone, the audience can listen to various types of water sounds and relevant ancient music like the Lofty Mountains and Flowing River played with Chinese folk musical instruments.
